Is “Transability” the Next “Walkability”?

While walkability is all the talk of real estate, most people still need to take some form of transportation to and from their home. Abogo, a new website currently in BETA testing, provides detailed transit information by specific address, including average monthly expenditure.

How it works:
The site estimates the total transportation cost for an average household based on address. This includes commuting, errands and “trips around town.” The estimate is tallied based on car ownership and use, as well as public transit use.

Additionally, the site has tips on how to lower your costs and reduce your CO2 impact. This tool truly helps when trying to figure out the real costs to live in a neighborhood.

Ike’s Place…Get It While You Can
Widely known to San Franciscans as the best sandwich shop in the city, Ike’s Place is set to close. This local favorite was given an eviction notice on August 3rd, and will be forced to close its doors on August 26th. Ironically, the popularity of the small sandwich shop is what ultimately lead to its downfall and imminent closure.

Neighbors and the neighborhood association have complained about the lines of people, noise from the line, and persistent smell of fried bacon. The original permit for the space was for a retail coffee shop, a far cry from what is now being served throughout the day.

The owner is actively looking for another location to run his wildly popular business. Get in line and get a sandwich before it’s too late! Get news and updates about what the future holds for this beloved spot on the Ike’s Place Facebook page.

Greening in the Mission
Currently, the lot at Folsom & 17th Street is being used as a parking lot. After reviewing plans from three developers to transform this concrete into green space, a compromise was reached and plans are now available. It’s rather ambitious, but would add some much needed greenery to the Mission District. Some highlights:

• A community garden complete with rain barrels, greenhouses and a section for compost
• A demonstration garden highlighting wildlife habitats and water conservation
• An amphitheater complete with a stage and space for an outdoor classroom
• An interactive exercise and play area with “elements for all ages”
• An espaliered fruit tree fence surrounding the entire footprint of the park

Follow the progress at the SF Planning Department website.
